The short videos app TikTok surpassed Google for the first time as the most viewed website in 2021. The Chinese-based app known for short funny videos, first traffic lead was in February 2021, and since then, it has dominated the web.
TikTok uses sophisticated algorithms to suggest relevant videos for users. Due to its popularity, it became a destination for all brands and services advertisers. TikTok reported earlier this year that more than one billion users visit their app/website each month.
At the same time, TikTok has been a target for multiple allegations. First, The American government accused the company of leaking users’ details to the Chinese government. Second, civil rights groups accused the TikTok algorithm of targeting minors with sexual and harmful content.
